The last hurrah: Johan Museeuw's final classic

Like the brutal trench warfare in WW1, it's bound to be an pitched battle across the wet and windy cobbled farm roads of Northern France this Sunday, from the Chateau of Compiegne to the Roubaix Velodrome. This year, as the 102nd edition of Paris-Roubaix, often called the Queen of the Classics draws nigh, Paris-Roubaix is wide open affair with no clear favourite.

Certainly 39 year old Johan Museeuw, the current King of the Classics, (Quick.Step-Davitamon), in his penultimate pro race must be at least everybody's sentimental favourite for Paris-Roubaix. Slated to retire next Wednesday at the Grote Scheldeprijs, GP de l'Escaut, Museeuw currently has 101 career wins, including 11 World Cup victories, more than any active rider. Museeuw was most recently 15th at the Tour of Flanders World Cup last Sunday and is currently over his early season intestinal and back in good form.

To win Paris-Roubaix, the more experience the better, and with three wins already in his palmares, Museeuw could take his fourth win Sunday to equal his fellow Belgian Roger De Vlaeminck, who dominated the Queen Of the Classics in the 1970's, winning four times in six years (1972-4-5-7). Johan has a great team in Quick.Step-Davitamon but if he fades, watch out for his teammate Tom Boonen.

Clearly Museeuw's heir apparent as a Classics killer, the fast, powerful 23 year old Boonen rode a superb race in Wednesday's Gent-Wevelgem. Already on the podium at Roubaix in 2002, Tom Terrific may be ready to inherit Museeuw's mantle this weekend. With cycling's best classic team in Quick.Step-Davitamon (but without Paolo Bettini), either Museeuw, Boonen or even 2001 Roubaix winner, teammate Servais Knaven could capture the coveted cobblestone trophy in the Roubaix Velodrome.

Sunday's big winner in Flanders was tough 33 year old German Stefan Wesemann from T-Mobile. Wesemann has been seeking for a classics breakthrough for some time now and he finally got it last weekend with strong, smart riding. Wesemann's runner-up spot to Museeuw at the 2002 Paris-Roubaix (with a broken pedal cleat) shows the former East German from Leipzig has what it takes to win in Roubaix and his T-Mobile team has the horsepower with Rolf Aldag Ivanov, Klier and Schaffrath to back him up. But Wesemann will need considerable luck to do the Flanders-Roubaix double like Lotto's Peter Van Petegem did last year.

Wearing dossard #1, Lotto's Van Petegem is a simply superb rider who rides with incredible cunning and power when he's on his game. Last week in Flanders, Van Petegem seemed to be missing the explosive power he had last year, but if crafty Petje has good legs, he'll be ready to make a move and it will likely be a good one.

One rider who's not lacking power this year so far is George Hincapie (USPS-Berry Floor). Big George has been riding big in 2004, first at Paris-Nice and then winning the 3 Days of the Panne stage race in Belgium recently. George is one of the nicest guys we know, but sometimes he's just too nice. Last weekend at the Tour of Flanders, he plenty of work, made a lot of good moves but was probably too generous and wasn't there when the key attack went on the Muur. If only he would take a page from the book of his friend and teammate Lance Armstrong and ride mean, Hincapie would be mighty scary!

As for the best of the rest at Roubaix this year runner-up, Dario "Il Toro di Scandicci" Pieri is a major question-mark. Although the Tuscan has shown little so far this season, he's a Ballerini-like rider; a massive powerhouse of a man that could truly become a Paris-Roubaix specialist this year with another good ride here. He may have been stronger than Van Petegem last year, but Pieri learned the hard way that Paris-Roubaix is not won by brute strength alone. Hopefully for the Saeco man's sake, he'll use his head more this year.

Landbouwkrediet-Colnago's Ludo, Ludo and Dudu show consists of the terrible trio of Dierckxsens, Capelle and Durand. These timeless, tireless humpers will try and put the 39 year old Dierckxsens in position to win and if his aggressive riding last weekend at Flanders was no fluke, old Ludo will take the measure of many a younger man come this Sunday in Roubaix.

Both Marc Wauters (Rabobank), team leader in the absence of World Cup leader Oscar Freire, who's sitting this one out and Jaan Kirsipuu (AG2R) are interesting outsiders, with British Pro champ and expert cyclocrosser / mountain biker Roger Hammond (Mr.Bookmaker) having a good year so far in 2004. It's a pity Stuart O'Grady is suffering from a cracked rib, as the Aussie from Cofidis was having a great year so far with 3rd place in Milano-San Remo, but it's unlikely he'll start Sunday, or if he does, he will still be hampered.

Former winner Andrea Tafi (Alessio-Bianchi) is struggling with his form this year so far and will be an unknown factor, while his fellow Tuscan classics specialist Michele Bartoli (CSC) will make only his second appearance in Roubaix, as the light, lithe Miki isn't really the rider for Roubaix.

Live coverage

Cyclingnews will be covering the 102nd edition of Paris-Roubaix live from start to finish. Coverage starts at 11:00 CEST (Europe)/5:00 EDT (USA East)/2:00 PDT (USA West)/19:00 AEST (Australia East).

In addition, we will be welcoming Rabobank rider Mathew Hayman as a guest commentator for the race. Hayman has ridden Paris-Roubaix four times but will not be taking the start this Sunday due to injuries sustained in a crash in Gent-Wevelgem.
