Veronica Ewers

Veronica Ewers may be from the small town of Moscow, Idaho, where she was born on September 1, 1994, but she made a big impact at the US Pro Road National Championships in 2021 and was soon racing in Europe.

After a collegiate soccer career at Williamette University, a Division III school in Oregon, she joined an amateur cycling team based in the northwest, Fount Cycling Guild. 2019 was her first season racing a bike, competing in local races near Seattle. 

With the national championships cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus global pandemic, the team took Ewers to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2021 for US Pro Road Championships. At her first nationals, she finished eighth in the time trial and then reached the podium in the road race, finishing third behind winner Lauren Stephens (Team TIBCO-SVB) and Coryn Labecki  (Team DSM). Her rise in the ranks had begun.

Just two months after her bronze medal, Ewers signed as a guest rider with Team TIBCO-SVB, now a teammate with Pro Road champion Stephens. Across the four stages of the Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas, her first UCI stage race, she landed on the podium every day and secured second overall. The team took her to Europe, and she continued with strong results including fifth on GC at Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche and eighth on the time trial stage at The Women’s Tour. 

By 2022 Ewers skyrocketed to the Women’s WorldTour with a two-year contract with EF Education-TIBCO-SVB. That first year she had victories at Festival Elsy Jacobs and Navarra Women's Elite Classics, along with podiums at Emakumeen Nafarroako Women's Elite Classics, Durango-Durango Emakumeen Saria, Giro dell'Emilia Internazionale Donne Elite and Tre Valli Varesine Women's Race. At the Tour de France Femmes, she made a statement with a fourth place on stage 4, a rolling 126.8km route, and finished ninth overall.

Now a confident rider with all-round abilities in stage races, Ewers performed as a team leader in 2023 at all the big events, taking a trio of top 10s on stages at Giro d’Italia Donne and finishing fourth overall. At the Tour de France Femmes, she was sitting 15th overall, just 2:17 behind overall leader Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx), when she crashed on stage 6 and broke her collarbone. That ended her season. A few weeks later she began to prepare for the road ahead, signing a two-year contract for the newly-formed EF Education-Cannondale squad.
