Biography:
French climbing star Thibaut Pinot, born May 29, 1990 in Lure, France, turned professional in 2010 with the Française des Jeux squad, claiming his first major result in his home region of the Vosges mountains with a stage victory in the Tour d'Alsace on the Ballon d'Alsace summit finish.
However, his breakthrough win came in 2012 when he soloed to victory in Porrentruy in the Tour de France. Showing a strong aptitude for stage racing, his next significant result came with a seventh place in the 2013 Vuelta a España, after a disappointing Tour de France.
Pinot's results continued to vary radically over the year in the Grand Tours, mixing dramatic abandons through illness or injury with a fourth place in the 2017 Giro d'Italia and a sixth place in the Vuelta a España in 2018. However, his stand-out results overall have ended in abandons, such as in the 2018 Giro d'Italia when he was on the verge of claiming a podium, or even more notably in the 2019 Tour de France, where a victory on the Tourmalet was then followed by an abandon in the Alps.
Other notable mountain successes for Pinot include the Alpe d'Huez stage of the Tour in 2015, at Asiago in 2017 in the Giro d'Italia and at Lagos de Covadonga, home to some of the last wolves in western Europe, in the 2017 Vuelta a España. Pinot is also currently the only French winner of Il Lombardia in the 21st century.
Pinot finished fifth in the 2023 Giro d'Italia and won the mountains classification before deciding to retire at the end of that season.
