Biography:
The small town of Durango, Colorado is big on producing professional cyclists and Quinn Simmons is one of them. Born on May 8, 2001, the mega-talented rider signed his first pro contract with Trek-Segafredo in 2020, racing at the WorldTour level before he turned 20. He already had a junior road race World Championship victory the year before as an 18-year-old, as well as a win in the Gent Wevelgem junior race and US junior men’s ITT championship.
In his second pro season in 2021, Simmons demonstrated why he jumped into the WorldTor fray with a stage win and GC title at Tour de Wallonie. He moved straight into his first Grand Tour and finished third on stage 19 of the Vuelta a España, almost winning from a breakaway.
By 2022 Simmons competed in his first Tour de France, his trademark attacking style landing him a combativity prize from a fifth breakaway of the race on stage 19. His preparations for the Tour saw him take mountains classification honours at Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour de Suisse.
Before the 2023 season, Simmons told Cyclingnews he liked “the challenge of chasing something”, and one of his goals was an elite US national title. That chase in June was rewarded when he used his aggressive style to take a solo victory in the US Pro Road Race Championship. He wore the stars-and-stripes jersey at a second Tour de France but had to abandon ahead of stage 9 due to fatigue and lingering stiffness from a crash four days before.
