Biography:
Katarzyna “Kasia” Niewiadoma was born on September 29, 1994, in Limanowa, Poland. It was in 2013 that Niewiadoma stepped into the top tier of professional cycling and signed late in the summer as a trainee with Rabobank-Liv Giant.
In 2014 in her first full season at the Continental level, she took her first UCI victory, at the 1.2 Frauen Grand Prix Gippingen, completed her first Giro Donne and demonstrated her ability to climb with mountains classification win at Ladies Tour of Norway. At just 19 years old, she finished the year with 11th place in the elite women’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships.
The next year she finished seventh at Worlds in the road race after winning the U23 title on the road at the European Championships and added a GC win at Euskal Emakumeen Bira and fifth overall in the Giro Donne. She placed consistently in the top standings of the mountains classification as well.
2016 was a big year with eight victories, including the Polish road race and time trial titles, stage 2 of the Festival Elsy Jacobs and the race overall, Stage 1 and the overall of the Giro del Trentino Alto Adige - Sudtirol along with two stages of the Boels Rental Ladies Tour. She started a three-year streak of runner-up positions at Strade Bianche. In 2017 she continued with victory on stage 1 and overall at the Women’s Tour.
In 2018 Niewiadoma made the switch to Canyon-SRAM and took victory at Trofeo Alfredo Binda - Commune di Cittiglio, as well as a stage and the overall at the Tour Cycliste Feminin International de l'Ardeche. The next year she broke through with a WorldTour win at Amstel Gold Race, and took a stage at the Women’s Tour. Then her win list hit a pause, as while the rider was incredibly consistent when it came to top tens and podiums she missed the opportunity to throw her hands in the air in victory.
Top podium achievements the next three seasons included second overall at the Giro d’Italia Donne in 2020, a bronze medal in the road race at the Road World Championships in 2021 and second at La Flèche Wallonne Féminine in 2021. In 2022 she made it on the podium at the Tour de France Femmes, coming third on stage 2 and in GC.
In 2023 at age 29, the Polish rider returned to the top step with a gold medal at the UCI Gravel World Championships, then wearing the rainbow jersey she won Big Sugar Gravel in the US.
Her 2024 season was her best yet, with a second place in the Volta Valenciana, second in the Tour of Flanders and the win in La Flèche Wallonne and, in a tightly fought battle on l'Alpe d'Huez, the overall win in the Tour de France Femmes.
