The POC Tempor may look wacky, but this helmet is designed to integrate with your body, and wind tunnel test results show that it does so extremely effectively.
Pros: Super-fast when you’re super-low Cons: Everything else
On the road you can actually feel that happen too – when you have your head low enough, it goes quiet and your speed lifts. We did a personal best on a local TT course in it, too.
So it's a winner, right? Wrong. You need to have your head extremely low for it to perform at its best, it gets buffeted when you turn or drop your head, its unstable over bumps and, incredibly, above 45mph it lifts and floats around. That’s as disconcerting as it sounds.
The bolts came loose too, and it’s very difficult to get on and off. It’s a classic example of too much CFD (computational fluid dynamics) and wind tunnel development around one aggressive position at one speed, and not enough real-world testing.
Unsurprisingly, Garmin-Sharp are now racing with a much more conventional prototype TT helmet, which will go on sale in a few months.
