2012 Volta a Catalunya
The UCI World Tour rolls into north eastern Spain this week with the 92rd staging of the Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalunya), a race that celebrated its 100th anniversary last season when Michele Scarponi raced to victory.
This year's renewal of the seven stage race, which comes quickly on the back of Milan-San Remo, sees several Tour de France contenders lining up. This year's Paris-Nice winner Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) will be considered to be one of the favourites after him and his team have made an impressive start to 2012. He will be challenged though by the likes of Andy Schleck (RadioShack-Nissan), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), in a race that promises to live up to its fabled history.
