2016 European Road Championships overview
The European Championships will take place in Plumelec in Brittany after security concerns forced the organisers to move it from its original host city Nice. The European Cycling Union had several options for a replacement, but Plumelec provided them with a ready-made route.
Along with the usual junior and under 23 events, the 2016 European Championships will feature elite races for the first time.
All of the road races will be run over the course of the GP Plumelec-Morbihan, a race that has seen both sprinters and climbers take victory. Samuel Dumoulin won this year’s race while his more climbing disposed teammate Alexis Vuillermoz was the victor the year before. The junior women will also ride their time trial event over the course.
For many the time trial events, the day will begin in Josselin and end in the host city of Plumelec. However, the route between the two cities will differ slightly from event to event. The women and the under 23 and junior men will take a much more direct route, heading briefly west before passing through Billio en route to the finish. The elite men’s competition is a much more wandering route, as it heads to La Vellée before winding its way back east and then down to Plumelec.
The elite events have attracted some big names with Peter Sagan, Julian Alaphilippe, Philippe Gilbert all pencilled in for the men’s event while Giorgia Bronzini, Elisa Longo Borghini, Marianne Vos and Anna van der Breggen are set to be in the women’s line-up.
