Tour of Chongming Island information
The Tour of Chongming Island returns after a three-year hiatus as the fastest sprinters in the peloton set to compete across three days of racing in Chongming, China.
The race is held from October 12-14, with the stages taking place in Chongming before moving into Shanghai and then finishing in Chongming.
The event marks the penultimate round of the 2023 Women's WorldTour, currently led by Tour de France champion Demi Vollering (SD Worx), while now-retired Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) is in second place in the standings and newly crowned road race world champion Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) is in third.
Tour of Chongming Island History
The Tour of Chongming Island was one of the first races cancelled from its original May spot on the calendar due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
Although the three-day race was supposed to be part of the UCI's revised late-season calendar that year from October 23-25, it did not make a return and has been on a hiatus for three seasons.
The Tour of Chongming Island is traditionally a sprinter's affair with three pan-flat stages that cater to only the fastest women in the peloton, such as Kirsten Wild, Jolien D'hoore, Chloe Hosking, and defending champion Lorena Wiebes - all previous winners.
Tour of Chongming Island 2023 Route
Organisers of the Tour of Chongming Island have held its three-day race along the same or similar course since its inception to the Women's WorldTour in 2016 and before. The route is fast and well-suited to the sprinters, with Lorena Wiebes winning all three stages and the overall title in the last edition held in 2019.
- Stage 1: Chongming to Chongming, 108.9km
- Stage 2: Shanghai to Chongming, 128.6km
- Stage 3: Chongming to Chongming, 112.3km
