Haut Var: Quintana wins on Col d'Eze
Colombian solos in ahead of Clarke, Calmejane, Pinot
Nairo Quintana claimed his second victory since joining Team Arkéa-Samsic, attacking on the Col d'Eze to win stage 2 of the Tour des Alpes.
The Colombian has been on sparkling form in the early season, winning the overall in Tour de la Provence earlier this month thanks to an impressive stage win on the Mont Ventoux.
On a similarly classic climb outside Nice, Quintana leapt away in the final kilometres to open up a 40 second gap on the chasing group.
Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) was the first to respond to Quintana's attack, but when Quintana reaccelerated, the Frenchman lost contact and was chasing at around 10 seconds with the rest of the group a few more seconds behind.
Pinot was caught but Quintana continued to power away to the stage win, with Simon Clarke (EF Pro Cycling) winning the sprint for second ahead of Lilian Calmejane (Total Direct Energie) with Pinot in fourth.
Quintana now leads the overall classification by 38 seconds ahead of Michael Storer (Sunweb), with Clarke in third at 40 seconds.

Cyclingnews is the world's leader in English-language coverage of professional cycling. Started in 1995 by University of Newcastle professor Bill Mitchell, the site was one of the first to provide breaking news and results over the internet in English. The site was purchased by Knapp Communications in 1999, and owner Gerard Knapp built it into the definitive voice of pro cycling. Since then, major publishing house Future PLC has owned the site and expanded it to include top features, news, results, photos and tech reporting. The site continues to be the most comprehensive and authoritative English voice in professional cycling.
