Tour de Slovenie: Uran wins stage 3 in Celje

Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First-Drapac) won stage 3 of the Tour de Slovenie after late attacks by local riders Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) and Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) were pulled back on the climb to the finish.

Uran and several other riders caught Roglic almost in sight of the finishline, with the Colombian then beating Darryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) and Roglic in the uphill sprint.

Overnight leader Ben Hill (Ljubljana Gusto Xaurum) finished in a group several minutes behind and so Uran also took the overall race lead.

"I know that Roglic is pretty strong and so today for me the only tactic was follow him and then wait, wait, wait. I had good legs for the last climb and so could win it," Uran said, almost struggling to believe he had won so comfortably when he hit the line first.

LottoNL-Jumbo and Bahrain-Merida kept them in check for Roglic and Mohoric and finally swept them up mid-way up the major climb with 25km to go. Roglic was the first to attack and was chased by Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe), with a select group of ne riders joining them. Roglic attacked again and reached the top of the climb first but Mohoric used his descending skills on the narrow road to pass them both and hit out alone.

The former junior and under-23 world champion was strong and held off the chase until Luka Mezgec and Impey got back and worked to set up the South African for the finish.

Roglic tried yet again in the final metres of the climb to the line but had timed his move poorly. Impey was better and kicked past him but Uran was on his wheel and timed his own kick perfectly so he hit passed Impey on the outside and hit the line first.
