Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) won her fifth consecutive race wearing the world champion's rainbow jersey when she stormed to victory at Strade Bianche on August 1. She caught and then attacked lone breakaway rider Mavi Gacia (Alé BTC Ljubljana) on the steep finish climb to take the win in the Piazza del Campo of Siena.
The 2020 Strade Bianche marked the restart of professional bike racing after the sport, and the world, was halted due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. It was second round of the Women's WorldTour, after the series began in February at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
The UCI announced the revised-late season calendar in May and the Women's WorldTour, and although some events have since cancelled, the series has retained 14 of the original 22 events. It will include three stage races and 11 one-day races.
Strade Bianche was originally scheduled to take place on March 7, but this year was rescheduled on August 1. It once again brought the peloton 136km of racing, that included 30km of gravel sections held along the famous white gravel roads around Tuscany, and finish on the steep ascent into the city of Siena.
