Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite Women 2019
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite Women 2019 - Overview
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad kicked off the European classics season for the elite women. The UCI 1.1 one-day race was held on March 2 in Belgium, offering the peloton a 123km race from Gent to Ninove.
Chantal Blaak brought her Boels-Dolmans team their first victory of the season with a solo victory. Marta Basitanelli (Team Virtu Cycling) was among the large chase group behind Blaak, and she sprinted to second place ahead of Jip van den Bos in third, which gave Boels-Dolmans two spots on the podium.
This year's race will marked the return of Annemiek Van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott), who has never missed an edition of the event since turning professional. This will be her first race since injuring her knee in a crash at the World Championships last September.
Omloop Het Nieuwsbald was re-vamped last year to include a hillier route. This year the 123km race included five cobble sectors and 10 steep climbs between Gent and Ninove.
