6 conclusions from the men’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Alaphilippe’s rainbow disaster, Roglic’s deserved Monument and more questions about race safety
The 106th edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège will take place on Sunday, October 4, 2020. Considered one of the toughest one-day races of the season, the Monument draws Classics season to a close.
The oldest Monument on the calender, Liège was first run all the way back in 1892. With a dozen long and steep climbs on the menu, and many more uncategorised besides, the 250km+ race is the toughest challenge of Ardennes week.
Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) won the 2019 edition of the race, soloing to victory from 15km out after attacking an elite group on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons. However the Dane will not return in 2020 as he concentrates on his Giro d'Italia challenge.
There are however a number of standout candidates including the recently crowned world champion Julian Alaphilippe. The French won the rainbow jersey a week ago in Imola, Italy, and heads to Liege-Bastogne-Liege as the rider to beat. He will have a strong team based around him.
Rigoberto Uran and Michael Woods lead the line for EF Pro Cycling and both riders have shown form in recent weeks. Adam Yates leads a competitive team for Mitchelton Scott, while the Tour de France 1-2 finishers in Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are also set to start. Both riders have yet to win their first Monuments but have the firepower to add to their palmares. There are a number of other key riders to watch, including former winner Wout Poels, Tom Dumoulin, Greg Van Avermaet, Tim Wellens, Marc Hirschi, and Chris Froome, who will use the race to build up for the Vuelta a Espana.
