Jasper Stuyven wins Deutschland Tour
Sonny Colbrelli takes victory on final stage in Erfurt
Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) sprinted to victory on the final stage of the Deutschland Tour in Erfurt, taking his second win of 2019 ahead of Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates).
Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) sealed overall victory, taking fifth on the stage. Colbrelli's stage win wasn't enough to see him overall the Belgian, instead remaining in second overall. Lampaert's time bonus saw him move up to take the final podium spot.
How it unfolded
The day's early break was a strong but short-lived one, with stage 3 winner Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-QuickStep) joined out front by Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Jenthe Biermans (Katusha-Alpecin), Magnus Cort (Astana), Nans Peters (AG2R La Mondiale), Kamil Gradek (CCC Team) and Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom-RusVelo).
With Stuyven's Trek team leading the peloton, the gap never got larger than two minutes, and any hope of victory came to end surprisingly here, with the bulk of the break caught before the midway point of the stage.
Cort pushed on alone, but he too was caught by the second climb of the day. Ben Gastauer (AG2R La Mondiale) counter-attacked, but he didn't last long out front either.
Joshua Huppertz (Lotto-KernHaus) led the race onto the closing circuits but was caught before the final intermediate sprint, where Lutsenko took three bonus seconds in a bid to hold onto his GC position.
Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and André Greipel (Arkéa-Samsic) put in a speculative attack in the closing kilometres, but at that point it was always going to end with a sprint in Erfurt. Trek started the sprint, but it was Nibali's teammate Colbrelli who proved the fastest man.
