Asgreen wins stage 3 at Deutschland Tour
Jasper Stuyven moves into overall lead with one stage remaining
Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-QuickStep) beat Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) in a two-up sprint to stake stage 3 at the Deutschland Tour Saturday, while the Trek rider's runner-up finish 17 seconds ahead of a select chase group lifted him into the overall race lead.
Asgreen bridged to Stuyven after the Trek rider escaped the bunch over the Hohe Sonne climb, and the pair powered away to the finish over a 14-rider chase group that started coming apart before the line. Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) led the chasers in for third place
“We made a plan today, followed it and did our job perfectly," Asgreen said. "We set out this morning with the goal of taking the victory, so we placed one rider in the front so we didn’t have to work in the pack, then we kept a hard pace in the last hour and especially on the climbs, before making the decisive move. Being able to deliver the win after such a fantastic team effort makes me very happy.”
Stuyven now leads the general classification by 13 seconds over Colbrelli with one stage remaining. Overnight leader and stage 2 winner Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) slipped to 17th.
The 2019 Deutschland Tour concludes Sunday with a 159.9km stage from Eisenach to Erfurt.
