Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race 2015
Cadel Evans (BMC) will wave goodbye to professional cycling on February 1 at the newly-created UCI 1.1 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. Evans, who is the only Australian to have won either the Tour de France or world championships, designed the race with former professional cyclist Scott Sunderland.
The race starts in the Victorian town of Geelong, host of the 2010 world championships, and makes it way through Evans' hometown of Barwon Heads before passing by the famous Bells Beach and continuing along the scenic Great Ocean Road. The race then heads via the busy Forest Road which gives away to rolling hills before a fast descent back into Geelong with the peloton to complete three circuits of the city before finishing on the waterfront.
Six WorldTour teams have been confirmed for the 174km race along with several Pro-Continental and Continental teams with no one expected to make it a dream farewell for Evans who is aiming to go out on a high.
Evans will start the race as one of the favourites with the parcours suiting a puncheur although a rider in top condition such as fast man Caleb Ewan (Orica-GreenEdge) could pull off an upset victory.
