Gee Atherton (Animal Comencal) put in a super-smooth run in front of 2,000 specatators at Innerleithen in Scotland this weekend to take home the title of 2009 British downhill champion.
The Animal/Commencal rider's main rival, multiple World Cup champion and defending British downhill champion Steve Peat (Santa Cruz Syndicate), was on course for the win but clipped a pedal and crashed on a steep chute near the finish. He limped home in fourth place.
A similar, but opposite outcome happened last year, when Atherton was up on the split, but crashed out.
Second place went to local favourite Ben Cathro (MTB Cut), with Matt Simmonds (ChainReactionCycles/ Intense) taking third.
Tracy Moseley (Trek World Racing) was victorious in the women's race, with a 15-second lead over Helen Gaskell (Halfords).
In the juniors, it was Bernard Kerr (Identiti) who took top honours ahead of Danny Hart (LaPierre), adding to his British 4X and European downhill championship titles.
