2016 Ronde van Drenthe overview
Chantal Blaak (Boels Dolmans) continued her run of good form with a commanding victory in the Boels Ronde van Drenthe, the second round of the inaugural UCI Women's WorldTour.
The 2016 Ronde van Drenthe was the second installment on the inaugural UCI Women's WorldTour. The 138.3km race started and finished in Hoogeveen, Netherlands. Defending champion Jolien D'hoore was on the start line with her Wiggle High5 team, looking to add another victory to her list of career highlights.
Always a top-class event, Ronde van Drenthe has traditionally been apart of the former Women's World Cup, which combined ten one-day races last year, but that series was replaced by the Women's WorldTour in 2016.
The Women's World Tour will host 17 events, a combination of one-day races and stage races, for a total of 35 days of racing. The first event on the Women's WorldTour this year was Strade Bianche Women on March 5 in Italy. World champion Lizzie Armitstead (Boels Dolmans) won the race and is the current leader of the Women's WorldTour. Armitstead also won the 2014 edition of Ronde van Drenthe.
During the 2015 Ronde van Drenthe, Belgian champion D'hoore celebrated her 25th birthday with a victory ahead of Amy Pieters (Liv-Plantur), who is her teammate this year, and Ellen van Dijk (Boels Dolmans).
