Van der Poel takes shock win at 2019 Amstel Gold Race
Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) delivered a surprising win at the 2019 Amstel Gold Race, singlehandedly chafing down a dangerous three-rider move in the losing kilometres and then winning the sprint after the escapees were reeled in just metres from the finish line.
The 24-year-old cyclo-cross world champion beat Simon Clarke (EF Education First) and escapee Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) to take his fifth win of the season.
When the chasers latched onto the leaders inside 100 metres to go, the young Dutchman stayed on the front and led out the sprint, denying any attempts to come around him and talking the only Dutch Classic in the Dutch national champion's jersey.
