Simon Carr seals overall victory at Tour de Langkawi
Gleb Syritsa wins final stage in Kuala Lumpur
Simon Carr (EF Education-EasyPost) sealed overall victory at the Tour de Langkawi while Gleb Syritsa (Astana-Qazaqstan) won stage 8 in Kuala Lumpur.
Carr moved into the overall lead with victory atop Genting Highlands on stage 5 and the 25-year-old defended his advantage thereafter to become the first British winner of the Tour de Langkawi.
“I’m really happy with the win, more so, as the first British rider to win the overall title. It’s a special feeling….it was a very hard stage today, but our guys did well especially in bringing back the breakaway group,” said Carr.
“I’m hoping that this win will be a beginning for better things to come for me, a stepping stone for a bigger pro career. I’m progressing little by little with every race, it’s been a good race for me here, no doubt.”
Carr finished the race 49 seconds clear of teammate Jefferson Cepeda, with Pablo Castillo (Equipe Kern-Pharma) completing the final podium in Kuala Lumpur.
Saturday’s concluding stage finished in a bunch sprint, though Syritsa had been part of a dangerous 14-man move earlier in the day. The Astana rider still had enough in his legs to claim the sprint ahead of Daniel Babor (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling). It was his second stage win of this year’s race.
“It’s been a good Tour de Langkawi for me, a win last year and twice this year. I’m super happy,” Syritsa said. “It was a hard day on the saddle today, and I was in the early breakaway group. My team did well to help me right up to the finish.”

The indefatigable Simon Pellaud (Tudor Pro Cycling) sealed the king of the mountains title and was also crowned the most combative rider.
“I’m super happy with this win, it’s been a tough week, tough race, but in the end, a great race, and great results, and great memories to bring home from Malaysia,” said Pellaud.
