Neilson Powless paid tribute to new World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) after a fast, fraught elite men’s road race in which the 26-year-old US rider eventually came home in 18th.

Powless was in on the action in the last crucial third of the race, for a while forming part of the 26-rider group that subsequently saw Evenepoel take a lone flight for victory.
