German track cyclist Jens Lehmann has announced his retirement. The 37-year-old has twice been a member of Germany's gold medal Olympic team pursuit squad (in Barcelona in 1992 and Sydney in 2000) and said on Monday that he would ride his final race on September 17.
Lehmann now plans to pursue a career in politics. Germany goes to the polls on September 18, and Lehmann will stand as a candidate for the Christian Democrat party.
