The day after Sunday September 4's Barclays Global Investors San Francisco Grand Prix comes one of the longest-standing races on the San Francisco area's calendar, the Giro di San Francisco at Levi Strauss Plaza at Battery and Union Streets. The Monday, September 5 race program runs from 8:00am to 4:00pm and is sponsored by McGuire Cycling; Lombardi Sports; Velo Promo; and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.
"The Giro di San Francisco is a special race because of its 31-year legacy; the tight and fast, six-corner course; the amazing feeling from racing on the streets of our great city; and the ambiance of the crowd that turns out to cheer," said Bruce Johnson, McGuire Cycling team co-manager. "The Giro's greater than $10,000 prize list will create quite fierce competition. We expect to draw from racers in the S.F. Grand Prix, which is now on the same weekend as the Giro for the first time."
Past winners of the Giro di San Francisco include triple Tour de France winner Greg LeMond who won the inaugural event in 1979; former world champion, Karen Brems; two-time Olympian, Eric Wohlberg; two-time Olympian, Kent Bostick; and national champion, Helene Drumm.
