Tom Boonen has been named 2005 winner of the Velo d'Or award by France's Velo magazine. Boonen beat seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and inaugural ProTour champion Danilo Di Luca in the selection for the prestigious award, which is selected by a panel of journalists selected by the magazine.
Boonen was recognised for his world championship victory and his win at Paris-Roubaix, among others. Armstrong, who has won the award for five of the previous six years, was second with 19 fewer points than Boonen (84 versus 65) and Danilo Di Luca was third on 35 points.
Velo's parallel award for French riders went to mountain biker Julien Absalon for the second year running. Absalon successfully defended his world championship in 2005.
