Festival of speed

Featuring the Commercial Color U.S. Women's Open and the Good Shepherd Tandemonium

Lehigh Velodrome, June 7, 2002

One Fast Night

By Gwen Hoover

Unlike opening night, good weather graced the Lehigh Valley Velodrome for the Festival of Speed on Friday, June 7. The Velodrome hosted the Commercial Color U.S. Women's Open and the Good Shepherd Tandemonium.

The Men's Tandemonium was an exciting event as the finals were watched with anticipation. Mike Beers and Josiah Ng sped into first place, surpassing second place finishers Erik Bonser and Todd Yezefski. Equally thrilling was the Mixed Tandemonium, with Darren Harry and Leeanne Manderson taking first place away from team-mates Anton Quist and Pam Fernandes.

The women got to show their skills during the Women 40-Lap Points Race. Though each rider gave her all, Ashley Kimmet managed to snag first place, surpassing 2000 Olympian Tanya Lindenmuth, who took second, and third place finisher Becky Quinn. The Women's Miss and Out was a close call, with Sarah Uhl grabbing first place. Becky Quinn took home the honors of the Commercial Color U.S. Women's Open for the second year in a row.

The night drew to a close with the awards from Commerical Color for the Women's Open. The Outstanding Sprinter Award went to Tanya Lindenmuth, Ashley Kimmet was awarded the Most Aggressive Award, and the Best Young Rider Award went to Kim Geist. The Spirit of Nicole Awards were also given out in memory of Nicole Reinhart. The Youth Award was given to Kim Geist and the Character Award went to Becky Conzelman.
