Breschel wins on Cauberg
Matti Breschel of Team CSC took his second win in 10 days, winning the sprint on the Cauberg, the traditional end of the Amstel Gold Race. The steep climb served as the final to the 177 kilometre second stage of the Ster Elektrotoer which began in Schijndel. Breschel outpaced Paul Martens (Rabobank) and Enrico Gasporotto (Barloworld) to take his second win of the year after he sprinted to victory in the Philadelphia International Classic last week.
"It's definitely a beautiful place to win a race – even if it isn't a classic," said the happy 23 year-old.
Much of the race was in the hands of a trio who stayed away for nearly 130 km. Chrisophe Edalaine (AG2R), Albert Timmer (Skil Shimano) and Mirko Selvaggi (Collstrop) had a lead of up to 7'40', but once the stage moved onto the more difficult terrain from the Amstel Gold Race, their lead started melting away and they were overtaken by the peloton with 29 kilometres to go.
High Road's Tony Martin finished in the lead peloton to keep the overal lead, eight seconds ahead of five riders who are tied on time after the six kilometre prologue.
