Saunier Duval and CSC headline in Argentina

By Hernaz Alvarez

The second edition of Argentina's Tour de San Luis has attracted two ProTour teams this year, Saunier Duval and Team CSC, with the latter making its first visit to the country's Cordoba region. The six-day event may be the perfect season opener for riders looking to find good condition early in the racing calendar, while avoiding the more intense competition at the Tour Down Under in Australia.

The tour will start on Tuesday, January 22 with a 3.5km prologue time trial through the streets of San Luis city. Stage 1 on Wednesday between San Luis city and Villa Mercedes will be ridden mostly along the highway that joins the two cities. The 168.4km parcours is virtually all downhill, with just one category 3 climb at km 20.9.

On Thursday, the riders will start in La Toma and end in Merlo. There are two classified climbs at km 96.8 and the final ascent into Merlo. Friday sees another individual time trial, this time a 19.8 km circuit inside San Luis city.

The key stage will almost certainly be on Saturday when competitors race 157.1 kilometres with three category 3 climbs and a final category 1 ascent to the Mirador de El Potrero, 1,210 meters above sea level.

On the last day the race will begin and end in San Luis city after heading around La Florida reservoir. The 144.5km route has two category 3 climbs (km 50 and 70) and a flat finale.

The two ProTour teams will undoubtedly be the star outfits to watch. Brothers Andy and Frank Schleck together with Argentinean native Juan Jose Haedo have been named in the line-up for Danish squad CSC. They will be joined by 12 Argentinean teams and a further 15 teams coming from Europe and the Americas.
