Jose Serpa wraps up Le Tour de Langkawi 2012
Guardini wins final stage
Jose Serpa (Androni Giocattoli) came through the final stage at Le Tour de Langkawi to seal his second overall win in the race. He previously won the 2009 edition.
Serpa’s teammate and last year’s race winner Jose Rujano (Androni Giocattoli) finished second overall, 30 seconds down. Victor Nino Corridor (Azad University Cross Team) rounded off podium in third, 1:03 down on the winner.
“I am really happy to win the Tour de Langkawi,” Serpa said at the post-race press conference. “This is where I got my first stage victory in 2006 and now I have won the overall general classification of Le Tour de Langkawi twice. It is very important for me and also my team. I want to thank them for all the work they have done for me. We are all very happy to bring this victory back home.”
Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini-Selle Italia) continued his dominance in the sprints, claiming his sixth stage with the 110.7 kilometre criterium in Kuala Terengganu, bringing his complete tally to 11 stages wins in two years. Jacobe Keough (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team) and Sonny Colbrelli (Colnago-CSF Inox) finished second and third but were no match for Guardini or his leadout.
Guardini’s win ensured that he took home the points jersey, finally wrestling it from Valentin Iglinskiy (Astana).
The final stage procession was brought to life when Misbah M. Rauf Nur (Malaysia National Team) and Joon Yong Seo (Seoul) attacked.
They were given some leeway and the duo had a gap of 1:06 after seven kilometres. Eleven kilometres later, they were over 4 minutes ahead of the bunch, with two riders – Shinichi Fukushima (Terengganu Cycling Team) and Sea Keong Loh (OCBC Singapore) - one minute behind and closing up.
The junction was soon made but Farnese were keen on leaving the race with yet another win, and began to lead the chase.
Fukushima and Joon Yong Seo persisted when the peloton closed in but it was Alexandre Vinokurov (Astana), competing in his final Langkawi, who made a last ditch attack. However when he and a small group of riders were reeled in the sprint became inevitable.
