Giro d'Italia Femminile 2019 - Overview

Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) has successfully defended last year's victory at the Giro Rosa. Winning two consecutive stages along the way, the 36-year-old's 3:50 lead over Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans) was never in danger on the final stage.

"It is so cool to win again, especially as I felt even better than last year," said Van Vleuten after the podium ceremony.

"It is a dream come true again. Last year was the first time, and now we did it again. It was a big goal of mine this year, to finish it off for the second time in a row is really special. The whole team was prepared, we reconn'ed stages, and we all worked so hard for this. You feel some pressure but then it’s even more special to finish it off. In a stage race you really need the team every day, and that makes the win so beautiful. We really nailed it, and tonight we will celebrate well."

Marianne Vos (CCC-Liv) won stage 10 on a cobbled, uphill finish at the Udine Castle, her fourth Giro Rosa stage win of 2019 and her 25th in all.

2019 Giro Rosa - Overview

The 2019 Giro d'Italia Femminile (also known as the Giro Rosa) takes place from July 5-14 in northern Italy.

It will be one of the toughest editions. This year's race was meant to feature a summit finish on the Passo Gavia (stage 5). However, organisers were forced to cancel the climb to Passo Gavia due to landslides and bad weather. Stage 5 has been re-routed to finish at the summit of Passo Fraele near Lago di Cancano.

There is also a second summit finish at Malga Montasio (stage 9), while there will also be an uphill time trial (stage 6) and a tough hilltop finale to the concluding stage 10 in Udine. 

The race will also include an opening team time trial in Cassano Spinola, which will kick off the overall classification.

The race for the overall title will surely begin as the peloton heads into the mountains on stage 5 for the summit of the Fraele.

The race will once again include an uphill time trial on stage 6 Chiuro to Teglio.

The women will face another uphill finish on stage 9 from Gemona to the summit finish at Malga Montasio. The finishing climb has an average gradient of 8.1 per cent and pitches of 20 per cent.

The Giro Rosa will conclude with a climb to the finish on stage 10 in Udine.
