Dahle-Flesjaa wins women's title
Estonians sweep top six men's places
The 12th annual SEB Tartu Rattamaraton doubled as the European Marathon Championships on Sunday. Norway's Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa won the women's race while three Estonians swept the podium for the men's race.
Allan Oras, Kalle Kriit and Caspar Austa went one-two-three in the men's race. Oras won with a time of 2:34:49, and Kriit followed in 2:34:53. The pair got away in the early kilometres of the race, and they soon built up a three-minute gap. Behind them, chasers in the main group failed to work together and no serious attempts to catch the two leaders transpired.
Nearer to the finish, Austa broke away from the rest of the chasers.
Closer to finish Caspar Austa teared away from the main group. He would finish 3:18 behind Oras.
Oras attributed his lead to riding a good tempo and a course with a fairly even landscape. "I yearned for this victory. The Tartu Maraton is a prestigious race, and winning it as the European Marathon, too, only made it better. I was racing for Estonia."
Estonia had a very good day, indeed. In addition to the top three spots, it also claimed fourth through sixth with Raido Kodanipork, Jaan Kirsipuu and Erki Pütsep. Austria's Alban Lakata was the top foreign finisher in seventh. He was followed by Andreas Kugler (Switzerland) and Hannes Genze
(Germany).
Dahle-Flesjaa won the women's race for Norway in 2:51:34. Poland's Maja Wloszczowska was second at 2:53:54, and Latvia's Ivanda Eiduka finished third (2:53:58).
The children's race featured 1,072 young cyclists for a 500m or 1km event and 572 for a 5.5km race.
Top club honors went to Rietumu Banka Riga of Latvia, followed by the Dutch National Team and the Estonian National Team..
In totaly, 5,092 racers from 18 countries competed on a 89km or 40km course.
