Hushovd to defend green jersey in 2010 Tour
Reports of Hushovd skipping Tour to concentrate on Worlds are denied
Thor Hushovd plans to defend his green jersey at the 2010 Tour de France. The Norwegian and his Cervélo TestTeam denied media reports that he would skip the Tour next year to concentrate on the World Championships.
Hushovd and his team management “consider defending that jersey one of their major goals for 2010,” the squad said in a statement issued Thursday.
“Winning the green jersey was my major objective for 2009, and 2010 will be no different," said Hushovd, who will attend the 2010 Tour presentation on October 14. "I love the Tour de France. Given the level of competition for the green, it will no doubt be a great fight in 2010 and I am looking forward to it.
“I am going to change some things in my program next year, to be in top form at the Worlds, since next year’s race suits me better than this year’s course in Mendrisio.” The 2010 World Championships will be taking place in Melbourne, Australia, with the road race course more suited to sprinters.
Hushovd, 31, won one stage of this year's Tour de France. He beat out Mark Cavendish, who won six stages, to take the green jersey by ten points. Hushovd also won the green jersey in the Tour in 2005.
