Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series #4

October 27, 2002

Wilhelm Masterful in the Mud

By John Jr Lefler

For the first time in over two years, the Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series had temperatures near freezing, steady rain and lots of mud! The wet conditions combined with a challenging course layout were exactly what LBC/cyclocrossworld rider Tony Wilhem neeeded to claim his first overall victory of the series.

"This course suited those with off-road skills, I felt good in these conditions," explained Wilhelm. "Joe (McWilliams of NHS/UNMC/Kaos) is so strong and I knew I had to attack in the trail sections."

The strategy worked as Wilhelm broke free of a small group early on and built a strong lead traversing the difficult course, which featured two barrier sections, two demanding climbs and some treacherous switchbacks that became more difficult to negotiate as the day wore on.

Last week's winner, Jesse Petersen (NHS/UNMC/Kaos) rode well to finish third behind teammate Paul Chapman who broke his cycle of third place finishes in the Cat. 3 field with an impressive effort. The second place finish puts Petersen second in the "PEDRO'S Points Competiton" with 34, two behind Wilhelm who keeps the Leader's Jersey for another two weeks. Chapman is in third with 26 points.

LBC/cyclocrossworld team leader Jay Thomas, rode well to finish ahead of Joe McWilliams for the second straight week and move closer to possibly taking the "PEDRO'S Points Leader Jersey" in two weeks. Currently, he is ten points behind McWilliams with 24.

The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues next week with Race #5 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.
