Petersen and Schlake Take Lead In Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series

By John Lefler, Jr

The cross season is finally here for Nebraska and if Sunday afternoon's opener at Pioneers Park is any indication of what's to come, get ready for an exciting couple of months! While roll-call at the start line sounded like an NHS/UNMC/Kaos group ride, it was the riders that stepped up early that raised eyebrows. Namely Jesse Petersen (NHS/UNMC/Kaos), who rode to a first place finish in the Cat. 3 competition and second overall behind teammate, Darin Schlake.

The winding circuit at Pioneers Park favored riders like Petersen, who possess strong off-road skills and it showed. Early in the 60-minute contest, a small group of four riders made their way off the front including Schlake, Tony Wilhelm (Lincoln Bicycle Co.), Kevin Wilkins and Joe McWilliams (both NHS/UNMC/Kaos). As the group began to splinter with Schlake taking the lead, a trailing Petersen made good time to stay within striking distance on the rough course, which featured many off-camber turns, rolling stretches of grass, some singletrack and three barrier sections.

In the closing laps of the event, Schlake suffered a puncture giving Petersen the lead, but only for a short time. After a quick wheel change, Schlake powered his way back to take the lead. This time he would not relinquish it.

Along with the impressive rides by Petersen and Schlake, Wilhelm (LBC) showed strong form to snag second in the Cat. 3 event and fifth overall. The Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series continues next Sunday in Omaha at Standing Bear Lake with Race #2 of eight.

Other News & Notes

The course at Pioneers Park suffered a bit of vandalism Saturday evening. In order to avoid future episodes, the majority of course set-up for the Lincoln races will be done on the morning of the events. Volunteers are needed and appreciated. Please contact Race Director, John Lefler, Jr. 402-499-2065.

Bring your trainer to the race! There will be a small television set-up at all of the races with some really cool cross race videos to check out while you warm-up!

Remember to keep your race number for the ENTIRE series.

After next week's race, the "PEDROS Points Leader Jersey" will be awarded to the top Cat. 1/2 and Cat. 3 riders.
